Knitted Toddler Socks

Knitted Newborn Sock imageThis is a basic free pattern for knitted toddler socks. The socks in the example image are knitted with Knitpicks Felici Self Striping Sock Yarn and size 3 double pointed knitting needles.

Items you’ll need:

  • Size 3 DPNs
  • Stitch Marker
  • Sock Yarn
  • Small crochet hook

Gauge: When working in St st, 7 sts and 10 rows= 1 inch

Knit the Cuff:

  • Cast on 43 sts. Join the last and first sts leaving you with 42 sts, and add stitch marker. Continue to knit in the round.
  • k 42 sts in rib knit (k1, p1, k1, p1 etc) for 32 rows.

Begin Heel:

(You should keep these stitches tight.)

  • k33 sts, turn
  • p24 sts, turn
  • k24 sts, turn
  • p24 sts, turn
  • Continue this pattern for a total of 14 rows, ending with a purled row.

Turn the Heel:

  • k8, k2tog, k4, sl1, k1, psso, k1, turn
  • sl1, p9, turn
  • sl1, k2tog, k6, sl1, k1, psso, k1, turn
  • sl1, p11, turn
  • sl1, k2tog, k8, sl1, k1, psso, k1, turn
  • sl1, p14, turn
  • sl1, k1, k2tog, k10, sl1, k1, psso, k2, pick up 9 sts, k18, pick up 9 sts, continue knitting in the round until you reach the marker.

Make the Gusset:

  • After you reach the marker, k9, k2tog, k30, sl1, k1, psso, k9
  • Knit another row to the marker
  • k9, k2tog, k28, sl1, k1, psso, k9
  • Knit another row to the marker
  • k9, k2tog, k26, sl1, k1, psso, k9
  • Knit another row to the marker
  • k9, k2tog, k24, sl1, k1, psso, k9
  • Knit another row to the marker
  • k9, k2tog, k22, sl1, k1, psso, k9
  • Knit another row to the marker
  • k9, k2tog, k20, sl1, k1, psso, k9

The Body of the Sock:

  • Knit remaining 40 sts in the round (St st) for 12 rows, ending at marker. (Or, adjust amount of rows to 1 1/2 inches shorter than the intended sock length from heel to toe.)

Complete the Toe of the Sock:

  • From the marker, k6, k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k16, k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k6
  • Knit another row to the marker
  • K5, k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k14,k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k5
  • Knit another row to the marker
  • k4, k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k12, k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k4
  • Knit another row to the marker
  • k3, k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k10, k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k3
  • Knit another row to the marker
  • k2, k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k8, k2tog, k2, sl1, k1, psso, k2
  • Knit another row to the marker

Finishing Your Knitted Sock:

  • Leaving the last 20 sts on the needle, clip your yarn and thread it through the remaining 20 sts with a crochet needle. Pull the tail through the beginning loop tightly to secure.
  • Weave the loose ends in.
